The Computer

Graphics Tablet

It seems obvious but I certainly could not have completed the project without a computer. I needed it for research, planning, recording my progress and evaluating - yes right this second I am using a computer.

I used a computer as storage space onto which I loaded all my footage, stills and documents.

Finally, I spent hours on the computer editing my video and then uploading it to the internet.

I certainly practiced and developed my skills on a graphics tablet over the course of this project. Beginning by using it to create a stop motion of the protest group. This was a lengthy procedure as I drew out every image from scratch. However I believe I became more competent as I continued and I am happy with the rough and 'obvious-brush-marks' look to the final result as it matches the protest board stop motions which I painted by hand.

I also used my graphics tablet to present ideas and research. I planned out my digipak/advert layouts and even used it to illustrate part of my evaluation.

Finally I created re-makes of images from the music video and from Barbara Kruger's famous work using the same rough brush stroke style for use on the digipak and advert.

The use of a tri-pod in the production process was incredibly important - especially for all my stop motion creation. The tri-pod is essential to keep the camera in the same place so that the stop-motion is smooth when put together. Each of the protest boards took at least 20-30 minutes to paint and this effort would have been ruined if the camera wasnt rock steady.

The tri-pod is also helpful for creating steady footage making the cinematography look overall more professional.

For filming the shots in the beach location I used a HD Flip video camera because it was suitably small and therefore portable and easy to use quickly in cold weather conditions. It had a high quality picture due to the HD feature this allowed me to capture the stunning background.

I filmed the rest of my video with my DSLR Nikon 3100. This is because it gave me extremely high quality and was therefore perfect for close-ups. It also allowed me to adjust the focus which I used on the shot of the protest group running toward the camera. However, due to me using the camera manually it took care as I had to watch that I didn't end up with a lot of out of focus shots.

This camera was also perfect for my stop motion stills and for taking my Digipak and advert images.

Equipment

On this page I am going to talk about how hardware equipment assisted me greatly in various areas of my coursework. Some of the equipment may sound obvious, however I certainly would not have been able to complete my project without them and I think it is important to acknowledge such equipment and not simply take it for granted.
